He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Schmits and Florence Schmits (Pugh); his granddaughter Andrea Nicole Schmits; his brother Kenneth Schmits; and his parents-in-law, Earl and Catherine Ford.

He is survived by: his wife Wanda L. Schmits (Ford); his children, Jacqueline "Jacie" Tomes (Mark), Charlena Gehl (Bruce Buschkoetter) and Anthony Schmits (Amanda Murray); his grandchildren, Joan Williams, Jennifer Sidebottom, Michael Gehl, Craig Schmits and Ethan Schmits; his brother Robert Schmits (Sharon); and his siblings-in-law, Carole Schmits and Roger Ford (Wanda). He is also survived by nieces, nephew, and numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to the American Diabetes Association.
