He was predeceased by: his parents, Grover C. Bates and Leilia M. Bates; his wife Mary Ellen Bates (Wildridge); his children, James Bates and Barbara Bates; and his siblings, Lavonne, Lloyd (Bud) and Robert.
He is survived by: his daughter Debe Williams (Jack); his grandchildren, Jennifer Wilson, Tara Stoute, Nicole Shetterley, Jason Bryan, Trevor, Bryce and Rachel Bates; and his brother Don Bates of Spencer, IN.. He is also survived by 11 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
