He is survived by: his wife Nina Schmidt (Becht); his children, Richard Schmidt (Christina) and Joanne Kay; his siblings, Gerald Schmidt (Pat), James Schmidt (Linda), Janice Schmidt, Sharon Gossman (Steve), Linda Miller and Lisa Schmidt; his grandchildren, Erica Schmidt (Harry Day), Kortney Curtis (Eric), Jessica Kay, Luke Calfee and Nicki Calfee; and his great grandchildren, Reid and Sawyer Curtis.

The family requests that contributions in John's memory be made to the New Albany-Floyd County Animal Shelter.
