She was predeceased by: her parents, Boyd Sumner and Opal Sumner (Wilcox); her husband Curtis Gates; and her siblings, Coretta Bruce, Ruby Galloway, Wanda Henderson and Boyd Sumner, Jr..

She is survived by: her children, Ann Gunn (David), Kay Tobler, James Gates (Karen) and Kenneth Gates (Donna); and her sisters, Margaret Kyle and Jonell Curtis. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.
