He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph J. Schmitt and Florentine Schmitt (Spahn); his son Glenn Schmitt; and his siblings, Darlene Hertel, Viola Goebel, Raymond, Alvin and Francis Schmitt.
He is survived by: his wife Catherine Schmitt (Seib); his children, Donna Sue Schmitt (Tim), Elaine Schmitt (Kevin), Herman Schmitt, Jr. (Cindy), Eugene Schmitt (Elizabeth), Mark Schmitt (Charlotte) and Ron Schmitt (Tracy); and his siblings, Mary Louise Brooks, Rita Ann Gries (Alvin) and Jerome Schmitt (Loretta). He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 24th 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Friday, October 25th 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A vigil service will be held on Thursday, October 24th 2024 at 7:00 PM at the Pierre Funeral Home (2601 W Franklin St, Evansville, IN 47712). A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, October 25th 2024 at 10:30 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church (6202 W St Joseph Rd, Evansville, IN 47720).
