He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Franklin Pierce and Elda Carpenter (Arnett); his wife Mary Carpenter; his children, John Carpenter (Teri), Cindy Howard (Ralph), Ted Carpenter (Robin), Ivory Snipes (Judy) and Leon Smith (Sandy); and his sister Mona Dean Flood (Ron). He was also cherished by twenty grandchildren, forty-seven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
