He was predeceased by: his parents, Aloysius Schaefer and Rosella Schaefer (Loehr); his son Patrick Schaefer; and his brothers, Jerome, Eugene and Louis Schaefer.

He is survived by: his children, Brenda Jost (Jim), Rosanna Evans (David), Janie Sollomon, Roberta Debes (Tom), Frank Schaefer (Laura), John Schaefer, Mark Schaefer (Darlene), Daniel Schaefer, Pete Schaefer (Brandie) and Adam Schaefer (Stephanie); and his brother Raymond Schaefer (Ruby). He is also survived by thirty two grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
