He was predeceased by: his parents, William Elder and Maud Elder (Holbert); and his spouse Marceline Marie Kruse. He is survived by: his children, Ryan Elder (Daniley) of Dillsboro, Vern Elder Jr. (Shelly) of Versailles and Teresa Barger (Steve) of Dillsboro; his brother William Elder Jr. (Vivian) of Rising Sun; his sister-in-law Vivian Elder of Dillsboro; his grandchildren, Curtis Lewis (Maria) of Shelbyville, Clay Lewis of Dillsboro, Ryley Elder of Dillsboro, Delaney Elder of Dillsboro, Meryssa Gray of Sarasota and Kelsey Gray of Madison; and his great grandchildren, Audrian Lewis of Shelbyville, Marty Scales of Madison and Emmalyn Scales of Madison. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in honor of Vern to Bear Creek Baptist Church and Southeastern Shrine Club.
