He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard Bills and Mary Mason Gunnell Bills; his siblings, Billy Gunnell, Dolly Hudson, Ruby Powell, Charles Gunnell and Dale Gunnell; and his friend Donnie Maze.
He is survived by: his wife Bobbie Jean Downs; his son Hugh Ernest Russell; his stepchildren, Sarah Lacey Osborn and Roman Lacey; his grandchildren, Brennon Russell, Ashton Russell and Blake Copley; his siblings, Sue Sparks, Linda Leach, Joe Wilson, Cindy Mangigian, Gary Bedwell and Jody Bergen; and his close friends, Mike Townsend and Nicky Chasteen.
Ernie found joy in donating monetary gifts to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
