He is survived by: his wife Alice Bates; his children, Jeffrey Bates (Cathy), Stephen Bates (Lauralee), Angela Callan (Jim) and A. J. Bates (Irvin); his siblings, Carol Johnson, Peggy Patton, Doug Gerdt (Terri) and Cindy Sprowl (Gene); his siblings-in-law, Ruth Bates and Jack Beckett; his cousin Sabra Duerstock; his grandchildren, Rachel Bates, Lindsey Haggerty (Shawn), Cameron Callan (Brooke), Corinne Callan, Abigail Bates, Grace Dziennik, Anthony Bates and Zach Dziennik; and his great grandchildren, Ellie, Owen, Olieva and Aletta.
