He was predeceased by: his parents, Viva Blanche (Netzley) and Charles Carl Hanes. He is survived by: his wife Iris Euvonne Hanes; and his children, Mark (Lauri), Doug (Kari), Linda (Dale) and Payne. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
