He was predeceased by: his parents, Eddie Yates and Elzire Yates (Marshall); and his siblings, Willard Yates, Terry Yates and Thelma Black.

He is survived by: his wife Kimberly Allen; his son Shane Yates (Kimberly) of North Manchester; his grandchildren, Tyler Yates of Mentone and Brayden Yates of North Manchester; and his siblings, William Yates (Judy) of Palestine, Phyllis Beam (Gary) of Mentone and Wilma Richardson of Claypool.
