He was predeceased by: his father Kenneth Gardner; and his brother Thomas Gardner. He is survived by: his mother Doris Gardner (Cox) of Coal City; and his siblings, Cheryl Hodapp (Mike) of Seymour, Kevin Gardner of Clay City, Jim Gardner of Coal City, Patricia Brewer (Bill) of Bedford and Jeffrey Gardner (Liz) of Coal City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
