He is survived by: his wife Claudia Smith; his children, Mike Hertel (Glenna) of Brookville, Mark Hertel (Gina) of Brookville, Matt Hertel (Jamie) of Batesville and Melanie Hertel of Aurora, Indiana; his son-in-law John Monroe of Brookville, Indiana; his sisters, Ellen Bauman of Penntown and Shirley Hoff of Sunman, Indiana; his grandchildren, Ben Cummins (Kristina Robinson), Bethany Monroe (Luke Whalen) and Sarah Monroe (Toby Bonwell); his stepgrandchildren, John Monroe (Sally), Brandy Monroe, Tim Metcalfe (Shelley) and Katraca Davidson (Jerry Eversole); and his great grandchildren, Cameron Metcalfe, Dylan Metcalfe, Emily Metcalfe, Jacksen Robinson, Jaxsyn Cummins, Kolbrie Cummins and Lilah Jean Cummins.
