He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman W. Kipfer and Gladys M. Kipfer (Mayer); his wife Dorothy L. "Dot" Baumgartner; his brothers, Tom and William "Bill" Kipfer; his son-in-law Mike Mayne; and his brother-in-law Frank Costello.

He is survived by: his children, Gloria Smithson (Franchon) of Westport, CT, Sheryl Mayne (Mark Longenberger) of Bluffton and Kurt Kipfer (Ingrid) of Carmel, IN; his grandchildren, Kellen Smithson, Kait Smithson (Anastasiya Turyna), Chris Mayne, Heather Skaggs (Trent) and Rori Kipfer; his great grandchildren, Isabelle Stout, Croy Stout, Hudson Skaggs and Nora Skaggs; his siblings, Ned Kipfer (Dixie) of Bluffton, Karyl Smith (Elim) of Warsaw, IN. and Nondes Costello of St. Ann, Missouri; and his sister-in-law Karen Kipfer of Lima, OH..
