He was predeceased by: his parents, William E. Benson and Helen Benson (Pollitt); and his brother Michael. He is survived by: his wife Kathy Benson (Helvey); his sons, Darin Benson (Tammy Strand) of Fishers, Michael Hollcraft (Brigitte) of Greenwood and Todd Alan Gresley of Houston, Texas; his grandchildren, Ian, Kate, Nathan and Rachel; his sisters, Linda Benson Plybon and Brenda Benson Toney; his brothers-in-law, David Helvey (Becky) and Drew Helvey; and his nephew Kyle Pollock.
