He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Wesley and Christine Cowan (Spears); and his sister Sue Carol Cowan. He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Cowan (Shaw); his children, Delaine Wooden (Keith), Melvin R. Cowan (Becky) and Daryl Van Cowan (Joni); his sister Glenna Schneck; and his grandchildren, Kimberly Saunders (Shaun), Karri Low (Caleb), Whitney Strange (Justin), Keaton Wooden (Abby), Andrew Cowan (Isis), Alec Cowan, Ryle Cowan, Nicolas Cowan, Kaitlyn Cowan, Kimberly Ceiddle (Brandon), Alicia Holloway (Lance) and Chase Odon. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Horizons United Methodist Church Celebrate Recovery Program.
