He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Jane Cook and Ervin Layne Sr.; his stepmother Pauline Layne; his siblings, Melody and Jerry Shafer; and his close friend Allyson Farren.
He is survived by: his children, Alecia Cowart, Adam Layne (Camy) and Amber Layne; his son-in-law Joshua Cowart; and his siblings, Jennifer Snellenburger, Charlie Cook, Jimmy Tanksley, Cheryl Yost of Anderson, Charlotte Prater, Kim Estep (Darrell) of North Carolina, Gary Shafer (Sharon) of Hurley, VA and Rhonda Goad (Charlie) of Blackstone, VA. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
