He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Smith and Elouise Smith (Linn); his son-in-law Chris Gaff; his great grandchild Corbin Gemmill; and his uncles, Donald Schmidt and Garland Schmidt.
He is survived by: his wife Marlene Endorf; his children, Mathias Smith (Mary) of Weiser, Idaho, Kimberly Phares (Dan) of Ligonier, Ronda Lortie (Norm) of Albion and Jody Gaff of Kendallville; his grandchildren, Greg Smith, Kenny Smith, Andrew Smith, Bradley Phares, Kristen Try, Tyler Phares, Jay Lortie, Joe Lortie, Todd Lortie, Abbey Mault, Jolene Deveau, Caleb Gaff and Courtney Gemmill; his brother-in-law Bill Endorf of Fort Wayne; his aunt Leone Schmidt of Fort Wayne; and his cousin Darleen Nelson. He is also survived by 34 great-grandchildren.
