He was predeceased by: his parents, Ned Smith and Mildred Smith (Town); his brother Lyle Dean Smith; and his son-in-law Dan Runyan. He is survived by: his wife Norma Kay Smith of Wabash, IN; his children, Lisa Studebaker of Akron, IN, Holly Vedder (Kevin) of Cookeville, TN, Heather Runyan (Jason Starzak) of Portage, IN and Kalyn Smith (Kara) of Kokomo, IN; his grandchildren, Preston Studebaker (Molly) of Mentone, IN, Leslie Fisher (Bryce) of Akron, IN, Shelby Vedder of Seattle, WA, Riley Robertson (Justin) of Frankfort, IN, Avery, Cole Runyan of Portage, IN and Penelope Smith of Kokomo, IN; his great grandchildren, Brylie and Logan Fisher of Akron, IN; and his siblings, Duane Smith of Rochester, IN, Marilyn Brofford of Akron, IN and Janet Vigar (Jerry) of Akron, IN.
