He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Mitchell and Wanda Mitchell of Mount Vernon, Illinois.; his son Brian Mitchell; and his granddaughter Shelby Mitchell. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Mitchell; his daughter Angela L. Barney (Alfredo Barney); his daughter-in-law Tammy Phillips; his siblings, Darrell Mitchell (Sheila), Debbie King (JR), Dianna Wheeler (Bob) and Denise Strothmann (Kris); his brother-in-law David Etheridge (Ginger); his grandchildren, Tiffany, David, Jessica and Brooke; and his great grandchildren, Haven, Rilie, Skyler, Lennon and Maddox. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
