We are sad to announce that on March 2, 2023, at the age of 68, Paula M. Ahles of Washington, Illinois, born in Breckenridge, Minnesota passed away. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Paul Ahles and Grace Cubb Ahles; her sister Mary Amundsen; and her nephew Jimmy Amundsen. She is survived by: her spouse Sandra Surface; her brother Joe Ahles; her nephew Steve Amundsen; and her pets, Theo, Allie, Sasha and Sammy.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or TAPS in her name.

“My heart hurts as I send my deepest regrets to Sandy. I first met Paula and Sandy years ago when Paula taught with me at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, AZ. Even after they moved to Illinois, we remained friends, and I got to see them each year when they came to Phoenix to enjoy their beloved Baseball Spring Training. My heart aches at the loss of such a sweet and wonderful lady. I have attached a 2021 photo of their spring visit when together we hiked San Tan Mountain.”

“Dear Sandra - I want to let you know that I recently learned of Paula’s passing. She was my suite mate and friend in college at the University of North Dakota. I didn’t stay in touch with her or many others upon graduation for unrelated personal reasons. Paula was such a wonderful suite mate - strong in her faith and someone to be there when needed. She didn’t like mornings and her roommate was just the opposite. Made for good humor. I sorry for your loss. Linda Ellegard 719-3380849.”
