He was predeceased by: his parents, George Amos Shearer and Ruth Shearer Johnson (Riddle); his grandson Bentley James Kensett; his siblings, Richie and Cassie Shearer; and his nephew Steven Wharton.

He is survived by: his wife Kelly Kensett of Warsaw; his children, Dacia Shearer of North Carolina, Michael Shearer, Jr. of North Carolina, Kayla Kensett (Harold) of Cedar Rapids and James Kensett (Alisha) of Keokuk; his grandchildren, Destinee, Gaidge, K'Lyn, Kryschtan, Blaze, Wyatt, Khloe, Dakota and Emmett; his sisters, Patty Seaver (Leland) of Keokuk, Melanie Shearer (Robby) of Georgia and Dianna Meredith (Bill) of Keokuk; and his nephew Josh Brown. He is also survived by several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial fund has been established.
