He is survived by: his wife Mary Smith of Virginia; his children, James E. Smith III and Patricia Onken (Robert); his grandchildren, Jamie Hazel, Justin Hazel, Amber Smith, Dakota Baker (Dalton) and Onken (Brenden) of Montana; and his great grandchildren, River Rose Owen, Rex Allen Hazel and Rosalyn Ann-Elizabeth Hazel. He is also survived by many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
