He was predeceased by: his parents, Keith Bateman and Blanche Bateman (Jones); his wife Sylvia Joan Steele; and his son Steven. He is survived by: his children, Gary Bateman (Mary), Linda DeGroot (John), Susan Burns (Craig), Joyce Bateman, Julie Bateman, Mark Bateman, Deborah Durako (Paul), Sharon Fusco (Thomas) and Laura Crowder; and his grandchildren, Shane Bateman (Macy), Taylor Bateman (Christine), Eric DeGroot (Penny), David DeGroot (Lori), Kelsey Durako and Emily Durako. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
