He was predeceased by: his parents, Ed Grindstaff and Esther Grindstaff (Patty); and his sister Dora Long. He is survived by: his wife Juanita Kay Dawson; his children, Sammy Grindstaff (Shay) of Friendsville, Tennessee, Tammy Mathis (J. D.) of Grantsburg, Illinois and Chrissy Hayden (Matt) of Vienna; his grandchildren, Dakota Mathis, Jessie Mathis, Kylie Branscum, Kensey Branscum and Riley Grindstaff; and his siblings, Darryl Grindstaff, Wayne Grindstaff, Deena Wilhoit, Edna Sype, Darlene Curtis and Betty Stone. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
