He was predeceased by: his parents, John H. Smith and Ethel Smith (Leidner); and his brother Eldon Smith. He is survived by: his wife Ruth Smith of Vandalia; his children, Stephen Smith (Joyce) of Mulberry Grove and Donna (Glenn Dothager) of Vandalia; his grandchildren, Scott Smith (Kristi) of Mulberry Grove, Ashley (Tyler Willingham) of Highland, Jeremy Dothager (Alexandra) of St. Joseph and Megan (Dalton Mills) of Greenville; his great grandchildren, Cullen Willingham, Corbin Willingham and Tucker Mills; his sister-in-law Helen Smith of Greenville; and his niece Susan Kelly of Greenville. He is also survived by three great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mulberry Grove American Legion, Northside Christian Church, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
