He was predeceased by: his parents, Carlton A. Smith and Susan Axtell Smith; his daughter Diane Wiman; and his son-in-law James Wiman. He is survived by: his former wife Mary Alice Cederquist; his daughters, Paula Thomas (Grover) of Jackson, MI, Holly Smith of Columbus, OH and Laurie Laley (Steve) of Spring, TX; his grandchildren, Craig Wiman, Kerri Wiman, John Thomas (Kate), Heidi Thomas, Katie Beemer (Austin), Michael Laley (Sarah) and Ashley Thomas; and his fiancés, Ethan, Andrew Laley (Erin) and Patrick Laley (Alyssa). He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Tuscola United Methodist Church or Douglas County Animal Control.
