He was predeceased by: his parents, Elza Merritt and Dorothy Merritt (Hilger); his daughter Lisa; and his brothers, Edward Merritt, Paul Merritt and Lee Merritt.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Ellen Cultra; his sons, Jeff Merritt (Nancy) of Bloomington, Dennis Merritt of Austin, TX, Ron Merritt (Karen) of Downs and Rodney Merritt of Bloomington; his grandchildren, Keri Merritt, Maddie Merritt, Hunter Merritt and Cory Merritt; his great grandchild Opal Merritt; and his sister Carol Miller (Don).
