He was predeceased by: his parents, Winfield Edward and Julia Bates (Blum); and his siblings, Winfield E. Bates, Jr. and Anna McNeight. He is survived by: his wife Debra Ann Ubbenga; his siblings, Warren Bates (Judy) of Hudson, IL, Emmy Bates of Dolton, IL, Debbie Bates of Clinton, IL and Dan Bates (Jean) of Normal, IL; his mother-in-law Joyce Ubbenga of Hartsburg, IL; his brothers-in-law, Kevin Ubbenga (Gail) of Hartsburg, IL and Nelson Ubbenga of San Diego, CA; and also Eric. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
