He was loved and cherished by many people including: his father Walter Bettenhausen; his wife Nancy J.; his son Brian Bettenhausen (Pamela); his grandchildren, Jacob Bettenhausen and Allie Bettenhausen; his sister Margie Badali (late August); his sister-in-law Judy Detrick; and his nephews, Steve, Tom and Tony Badali.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to NAWS in Mokena, IL to honor Merle's love of animals.
