He was predeceased by: his father Rennie Thorne; his wife Bessie Thorne (Rutledge); his daughter Janet Sue Thorne-Martin; his grandson Michael Wayne Thorne II; and his siblings, Henry Thorne, Bernard Thorne, Coy Thorne, Ruth Anderson and Effie Hurst.

He is survived by: his children, Jimmy Elmer Thorne (Sheri Lynn) of Mechanicsville, Michael Wayne Thorne (Kelly) of Williamsburg, Virginia and Anita Carol Thorne-Robinson (Kelly) of Texico, Illinois; his grandchildren, Arthur Wayne Derrenbacker (Jennifer) of South Hill, Jerry Sylvester Ashley, Jr. (Melody) of South Hill, Crystal Gail Webster (Chris) of Mount Vernon, Kelly Wayne Robinson (Angie) of Texico, Lisa Marie Lambrecht (Richard) of Mechanicsville, Michael Wayne Thorne III (Michelle) of Gatesville, Jimmy Elmer Thorne, Jr. (Amanda) of Mechanicsville and Charles Dylan Thorne (Emily) of Mechanicsville; and his sister Leona Morris of Princeton. He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
