He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph A. Smith and Della J. Smith (Zigman); his son Michael Joseph Smith; his granddaughter Samantha Elizabeth Brahler; and his brother Dr. Edward A. Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Janet G. Smith of Taylorville; his children, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Scottsdale, AZ, Peter Smith (Charlotte) of Bowling Green, KY, Katie Sample (Trevor) of Edinburg, Matthew Smith (Colette) of Scottsdale, AZ, Margaret Southard (Alan) of Grosse Pointe, MI and Joe Smith (Kirstyn) of Bowling Green, KY; his grandchildren, Paetra Smith (Cory), Demetria Smith, Andrew Sample, Camden Sample, Adella Southard, Ian Southard, Olivia Smith, Anabelle Smith and Ezekiel Smith; and his sister Teresa King (Donald) of Huntley. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
