She was predeceased by: her parents, Olive Schaefer and Elmer Schaefer; her daughter Ruth; her granddaughter Karen; and her brother Louis.
She is survived by: her husband John William Schmitz; and her children, Deborah Paulin (James) of DeKalb, Peggy Benkeser (Paul) of Atlanta, Georgia, David Schmitz (Pam) of New Brighton and John Schmitz Jr. (Bonnie) of Streator, Illinois. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces.
