He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert I. Schmitz and Edna Mae Schmitz (Krantz); his son Ian Robert Schmitz; and his sisters, Gail Schmitz and Mary Schmitz Gaydos.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Russell of Streator; his daughter Aprille Schmitz of Normal; and his siblings, John Schmitz of Chicago, Scott Schmitz of Rio Rancho, NM, James Schmitz of Ironwood, MI, Margaret Schmitz of Colona, IL, Rita Schmitz-Teff (Richard Teff) of China Springs, TX and Edna Schmitz of Streator. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
