He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert M. Schmitt and Frances Schmitt (Hiller); his sisters, Elaine, Kathleen and Leone; and his brother-in-law Roland Bauer.

He is survived by: his wife Beverly Bergsma; his children, David, Cynthia Dantuma (Bruce), Albert (Janice), Cheri Cesaroni (Mark), Sandra (Nick) and Rusher; his grandchildren, Timothy Dantuma (Chelsea), Tracie Dohm (Zach), Kristie Saavedra (Carlos), Lori Dantuma, Cameron (Christa), Alexa Schmitt, Craig Jakobsen (Pooja Louis), Emily Jakobsen (Ryan Flynn), Brad, Brandon Cesaroni, Brianna Klein (Sam), Alec Rusher and Matthew; his stepgrandchildren, Katherine and Brooklyn Schmitt; and his siblings, Georgia Bauer, Donna Condon (Ed), Barbara Wagner (Donald), Leon (Ruth), Dennis (Verna) and Gary Schmitt (Cathy). He is also survived by 26 nieces and nephews.
