He was predeceased by: his parents, John Petrus and Florence Petrus (Watson); his son Tedd Petrus; and his grandson Eric Bergren. He is survived by: his wife Sharon J. Petrus (Koch); his children, John Petrus and Laurel Bergren (Dan); his daughter-in-law Marva Petrus; and his grandchildren, Rachel Kriss (George), Kevin Petrus (Alex), Jason Petrus, Melissa Petrus, Daniel Petrus, Jessica Larsen (Justin), Jake Bergren (Alex) and Jordan Bergren. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
