He was predeceased by: his daughter Charlotte Kaffer; his father Stephen (Leona); and his brother Robert Mertens. He is survived by: his wife Rose; his children, Julie Weber (Richard), Michelle Schlarman (Tom), Ronald Mertens and Stephen Mertens (Mary); his grandchildren, Amy, Dan, Amanda, Emily, Richard, Nick, Hannah and Joe; his sisters, Carol Turbek (John) and Bonnie Jung; and his sister-in-law Kathleen Mertens. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
