He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Schmitt and Dorothy Schmitt (Norton); his wife Margaret Barry; his stepfather Otto Hoffman; and his siblings, William, Jack Schmitt, Dorothy Blum and Joanne Harris.
He is survived by: his children, Patrick Schmitt of Princeton, IL, Mary J. Kopriva (William) of Louisville, KY, Ellen Hilmo of Rock Island, IL and Jean Schmitt of Annawan, IL; his grandchildren, Ben, Lisa Gerhardt, Nicholas, Benjamin Kopriva and Kaitlin Schmitt; and his great grandchildren, Rylin and Konnelly Gerhardt.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing will be required.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church or the Sheffield Rescue Unit.
