He was predeceased by: his parents, C. W. Nelson and Helen Nelson (Gnuse); his wife Nola Dickerson; his former wife Elizabeth Peck; his wife Betty; and his brothers, Jim Nelson and Tom Nelson.

He is survived by: his children, Robert T. Nelson (Jan Thom) of Champaign, IL., Lisa N. Evenson (Douglas) of Shawano, WI, James D. Nelson (Robin) of Savoy, IL., David T. Nelson of Gibson City, IL. and Annmarie N. Gibson (Greg) of East Peoria, IL.; his grandchildren, Bob, Maya, Theresa, Noel, Bridgett, Jordan, Annabella, Rachel, Madelyn, Gage, Ryan, Grace, Evan, Colin and Hope; and his brother Garry Nelson (Meledene) of Norfolk, NE.. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
