He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Dale and Laverne Walkington Coates; his brothers, Donald Lee and David Ellis Coates; and his grandsons, Noah Coates and Jesse Dale Coates.
He is survived by: his wife Lola Kae Dawdy; his children, Ebert Dale Coates (Joyce) of Greenfield, Bart Andrew Coates (Tina) of Jacksonville, Debra Kae Coates, Dee Anna Darr (Brian) of Carrollton and Charles Deaton Coates (Jill) of Caseyville; his grandchildren, Sean, Jacob Coates, Anna Gansz (Eddie), Crissi Heckrodt (Nathan), Shane Darr (Jessica), Morgan Sutton (Hunter), Samantha Meado (Justin), Macy Meyer (Brock), Madison Coates (Dakota Coffey), Lila, Charlotte and Lincoln Coates; and his sister Beverly Moulton (Carl) of White Hall. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren.
