Jeff Huebner wrote a sympathy message

“I'm deeply saddened to hear about Barry's passing. As a longtime writer on public art and murals in the Chicago area, he had always been an accessible and generous source on art conservation topics, and a friend. I learned much from him; he helped demystify the process and put me in touch with many interesting people. He made my stories better. And I'll always remember his own conservation stories, which read like mysteries and thrillers. He was among our finest. Condolences to Mary and family.”

Robert Baldwin, Associate Professor of Art History, Connecticut College / photo from Barry Bauman wrote a sympathy message

“I worked under Barry as an intern in Painting Conservation at the Art Institute for 2 summers (1975-6). He was as free from art-world pretension as anyone could get - see photo of him from those years which I posted. It wasn't a surprise when he quit and founded the Chicago Conservation Center (1983-2003) and became his own boss, retiring at 53. He then did something unprecedented in the world of art conservation: he worked for free for 20 years for smaller museums. Bless you, Barry. love RB”

“Hello, I am the curator at the University of Kentucky Art Museum in Lexington. We were one of the many small non-profits that benefited from Barry's generosity in restoring art that we could otherwise not afford to do. Beyond that, he visited to do two programs here at the Museum, and each was among the most informative, amusing and enthusiastically received talks we have ever offered. I know how much his family meant to him. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Janie Welker”

“Dear friends and loved one of Barry: Barry gave a great gift by conserving works of art for smaller museums that could not afford proper conservation. When I was Director at UK Art Museum, he helped us with several works, and also came to present his findings and to explain the work he did to our audience. We were very grateful. I am sorry to learn of his passing. He was a uniquely charitable art professional. Kathy Walsh-Piper”
