He was predeceased by: his parents, George Thompson and Gladys Thompson; and his sisters, Hazel Ackeberg and Leone Pierson. He is survived by: his significant other Shirley Van Damme; his children, Mark Thompson (Lorraine) and Becky Lambert; his granddaughters, Sara Whitbeck (John), Andrea Thompson (Greg Ruff), Allison Stone (Ernie) and Hillary Burmeister (Joe); his great grandchildren, Gracie and Bailey Whitbeck; and his granddaughters, Zoey, Quinn Ruff, Aletheia, Azariah, Ainesis, Evangeline Stone and Lyra Burmeister.
He donated over 20 gallons of blood and in his final act of service, he donated his body to science at the University of Iowa.
