He was predeceased by: his parents, Otto Cotter and Alice Cotter; and his brother Robert Cotter (Laura) of Georgia. He is survived by: his wife Betty; his children, Linda Kern (Gary) of Princeton, Sherry Ballard (Kevin) of Peru, Sandy Hyslop (Charles) of Kentucky and Peggy Nelson (Ken) of Oregon; his grandchildren, Eric Nelson, Jessica Nelson, Mathew Kern (Maribel), Valarie Tradewell (Mauri), Sarah Hyslop, Jenny Hyslop, Brian Bublitz and Karen Walker; and his great grandchildren, Damien Walker, Anthony Bublitz, Julie Kern, Michelle Tradewell and Ashley Rivera.
