He was predeceased by : his parents, Lyle and Lillian M. Downen, Jr. (Woodside); his former life partner Mary Estelle Smith; his wife Mary E. Downen; his parents-in-law, Bernard and Eunice Smith, Sr.; and his nephew Shawn Schwartzkopf.

He is survived by : his children, Mary Lynn Carns (David) of Pinckneyville, IL, Robert Downen (Jennifer) of San Antonio, TX and Todd Downen (Letitia) of Fairview Heights, IL; his sister Jean Hill (Brian) of Tamaroa, IL; his siblings-in-law, Bernard Smith, Jr. (Carol) of Pinckneyville, IL, Janet Smith of Pinckneyville, IL, Margaret Maschhoff of Nashville, IL and Brenda Smith of Mt Prospect, IL; his grandchildren, Kaleb Hubler, Allison Smith (Keith), Tyler Downen, Logan Downen, Tucker Downen, Jennifer Carns, Lindsay Carns, Todd Carns (Cassidy), Lucy Downen and Kolbi Carns; his great grandchildren, Alayna, Bryson, Avery and Joseph; his close friend Jim Stevenson of Pinckneyville, IL; and his niece Barb Stevenson. He is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews.
