He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence A. Schmitt and Florence Menke Schmitt; his son Joseph; and his stepsons, James (Barbara) and Charles.
He is survived by: his children, John, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) and Judith Schmeling; his stepchildren, Bruce, Jeanmarie and Douglas (Sukyi); and his stepdaughter-in-law Michelle. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the Catholic Relief Society or the American Cancer Society.
