He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, George E. Mattern and Gertrude Mattern (Kapraun); his son Stephen Mattern (Marcia) of Brimfield; his stepsons, John Maubach (Shirley) of Henry and Brian Maubach (Lori) of Chillicothe; his sister-in-law Marge Mattern of Edwards; his sisters, Florence Steele of Henry and Clara Steele of Kewanee; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Kelly (Liam), Catherine, Silas, Bernadette, Sebastian and Solomon Mattern. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Congregation of Saint John Contemplative Sisters, Princeville, or to St. Joseph's Church, Brimfield.
