He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Gates and Mary Laverne Gates (Brown); his sister Louise Connelley; his brothers-in-law, Len Patrem, Gene Nance and John Hamilton; his nephew Kirk Patrem; and his niece Becky Gates.
He is survived by: his wife Linda Hamilton; his children, Dan Gates, Amanda Favazzo (Michael), Tom Gates (Kellie) and Robert Gates (Mika); his grandchildren, Vincent Favazzo, Gillian Favazzo (Andrew Spicer), Kelsey Magers (Luke), Brandon "Bub" Gates, Aaron Gates, Antonio Favazzo, Karlie Gahimer (Austin), Conner Hale, Jenna Gates, Ashley Brandenburg (Athena) and Cameron Jordan (Cassie); his siblings, Fred Gates (Cindy), Wanda Lacy and Jim Gates (Naomi); his sisters-in-law, Sue Nance, Nancy Clark (Ed) and Liz Steber; and his friends, Luther Colter and Paula Williams. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, in it's fight against Niemann Pick C-1 in honor of Charlie's grandson, Antonio, or to the American Heart Association.
