He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Jacob and Helen Schaefer (Kelly); his former wife Gladys Ann Cibereyon; his sister Phyllis Sutton; and his nephew Richard Sutton.

He is survived by: his wife Bess Jean (Volker); and his daughters, Lynn Marie Schaefer of Crete and Jill S. Meyer of Witt. He is also survived by five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces; and several cousins.
