He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Joseph Abele and Helen Marie; his siblings, Thomas A. Abele and James D. Abele; and his son Allan Abele.
He is survived by: his siblings, Robert J. Abele, Susan Abele (Dan Greiner), Nancy Larson Thurman, Kathleen DeSando (Dennis), Carol Schiavone (William), Amy Abele (late Dan Sorrisso) and Peter Abele (Mary).
In lieu of flowers, John asked that people make a contribution to WTTW in Chicago in his name.
